“The artist of angelic voice, who heals the soul and opens the heart…”
– The New York Times

Pure Live Music announces award-winning, world renowned Sevdalinka singer Božo Vrećo, superb performer, author and composer of Sevdalinka, a traditional genre of folk music from Bosnia and Herzegovina. For over 50 years, no one has ever dared to make changes to the existing Sevdah and to write new lyrics inspired by the centuries-old Sevdah lyrics, but Božo Vrećo, a renowned musician of the new generation, has been hailed as today’s most interesting and best-known interpreters and songwriters of this style. This lyrical tenor with a huge vocal range, unusual voice and visual identity has sold-out well-known concert halls and theater venues all over the world. Božo Vrećo identifies as both a man and a woman, and this duality can be seen in everything he creates.

In a musical sense, Sevdalinka is characterized by a slow or moderate tempo and intense, emotional melodies. Sevdalinka songs are very elaborate, emotionally charged and are traditionally sung with passion and fervor. The combination of Arabic, European and Sephardic elements make this type of music stand out among other types of folk music from the Balkans. Just like a majority of Balkan folk music, Sevdalinka features very somber, minor-sounding modes, but unlike other types of Balkan folklore music it more intensely features minor second intervals, thus hinting at Arabic maqam and the Phrygian mode. As a result, the melodies are noted for leaving a strong melancholic feeling with the listener.
