St. Louis native, Tru Born (Anthony Michael Peterson), is a guitarist, singer-songwriter, lap steel player, music educator and author whose life has been music. His education began in St. Louis, at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music in classical guitar, and then to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he graduated and became a faculty member. He moved to New York to extend his career, touring and working with fellow St. Louisan Oliver Lake, Joan Baez, Janis Ian, Cassandra Wilson, Peter Gabriel and George Benson. He also played with saxophonist Branford Marsalis while on tour in St. Louis at Jazz at the Bistro. Tru later earned his Master’s in Music Composition and Jazz Studies at North Carolina Central University and has authored a book on jazz improvisation for all instruments, Three Masters, Five Ways, which is available at trubornworldwide.com.
